Rhododendron Garden Tour, Mother's Day 2024 | Flowers are Blooming at Kincaid's Nursery
Rhododendrons are blooming and it's time for another garden tour. It's been a crazy weather cycle this spring, with late frosts, decreased rainfall, and hotter than usual temps! It all came together on Mother's Day week though, and we've got some beautiful blooms happening right now.

I've been struggling to get blue hydrangeas blue for the past 3 years and have been lowering the PH more and more every year and still no luck. Yes, these are Endless Summer and were vibrant Blue when I bought them. This year my PH is just a little over 4 and sometimes under 4 on my Kelway meter. I've been hitting them with Epsoma soil acidifier starting every fall for the past 3 years and actually bought a 30lb bag and went through a whole bag every year to get about 8 mature plants to turn blue. The 4 plants in front have beautiful blooms but are dark red, and with a ph of 4. What finally turned them blue was adding Aluminum Sulfate. I read something that said it's not the PH that turns them blue, but actually the aluminum, but the aluminum can only be absorbed under low ph conditions. Turns out my soil must have lacked aluminum and there was none to uptake regardless of how low the ph was, I know this had an affect because I started freaking out when I could see the pink starting to show on the buds. I hit them hard with aluminum sulfate and actually mixed up about 1/4lb into a gallon of water and misted the buds and leaves every day for about a week. Let it sit on the leaves for about 2-3 hours then rinsed it off. The remaining buds were blue after they bloomed and now I have multi colored blooms of Red and Blue. So Aluminum is the key to Blue, and low PH allows the plant to absorb it. If you don't have enough aluminum in the soil for uptake, they will never be blue no matter how low the ph

Hi, i’ve been watching your videos.(well some 😀) I want to know after the plant has set roots. When is it ready to go in the ground outside?Tomorrow I’m going to start propagating some hydrangeas and evergreen azaleas. I am going to leave them in a sealed container on the north side of my house. I live in zone five in Michigan. I figure they will be ready by the end of July once they have roots. Are they ready to go in the ground or should I keep them inside until next spring thank you.

Ok, obviously I didn’t do everything correctly, but I can’t figure out what. Prepared cutting as you showed, but planted into a perlite/sand/peat mix in a plastic 8 inch deep tub. (With top) Added about an inch of water. To five inches of planting soil mixture. Three weeks all is looking good. Then in what seems like overnight, all cut leaves turned brown. Tub is in shade, cover on. Thoughts?

Hi Mike! Absolutely so glad I came across your videos. I live in MO and have 3 hydrangea bushes (20-25 yrs old, dont remember what variety). The only thing I ever put on them is coffee grounds. They get tons of luscious green leaves every year, but only bloom abundantly every 3 to 5 yrs. To my knowledge the blooms grow from old stems. I only remove dead and brittle stems each spring and never prune. Now that I've discovered your videos, I can't wait to try the bone meal, epsom salts, and mulch to help my old girls out. Thank you so much for your information!

So inspired by your content Mike ❤ what kind of sand would you recommend? I'm in the UK, and can't get the pine bark and would like to try sand, do u use horticultural sand? Do you think that's necessary? Or will regular sand do? I understand there can be an issue for some plants with some sand due to the pH. and that's why horticultural sand is necessary? But is it necessary? It's much more expensive than regular sand Would be interested to know your thoughts?

Hey Mike. You gotta be like man... I gotta answer this guy now too 5 years later? I've watched this video more than once until finally I am at the same 6.5 weeks today. Sorry to bug you, really am. But Thank you for answering my brother. It's just that I have the same exact injury as you, but I cut that finger right where the palm and finger start. Cut the same tendon as you though. FDP Here's my question. Did you have, at the time of this video, a difficult time moving your other 3 fingers? Especially in the morning? Super stiff, can't make a fist at all with the other 3 fingers until you got up and loosened them up a ton every morning? This is where I'm at. I look at this video of yours and you seem to move your other 3 fingers better than I do and definitely looks like you can make a fist with those 3 better than I do for sure. Could you do that in the morning? Did you wear a compression glove? I believe my physical therapist was not watching my other fingers and forearm and atrophy was setting in really hard for 3.5 weeks. Forearm lost a lot of it's size and hand veins disappeared and they still told me not to move any of my fingers. Essentially, I didn't move my fingers for 3.5 weeks at all except with the other hand. Atrophy was setting in. I finally took my own health into my hands at 3 weeks and 5 days and took the splint off and started moving my fingers. Barely could move them much. I am now to the point where I can move them after exercise in the morning. Hurts to move any of my fingers due to the edema in the whole hand. You can see the whole hand is slightly larger than the other and it's restricting my movement. As for my pinky finger I cut... Mine doesn't move as well as yours does, but that's not my concern. My concern now is the use of my other fingers at this point. I'm sorry for the long question. I just want to know one thing... did your other fingers get affected and feel stiff in the joints and not move great in the morning at 6.5 weeks or no? Thanks Mike. May The Lord Jesus bless your hand, and thanks for the video. Kevin

If all this video was good for, is to help you 5 years later, then it was all worth it. Yep, my other fingers were stiff, swollen, and weak for several months. I wondered if they’d ever be normal again, just like you’re thinking. I’d wake up every morning and passively bend each finger with my left hand just to squeeze all the excess fluid out of them. I lost a lot of muscle in my whole right arm and had no grip strength. Once the doctor told me I could start lifting weights again and actively using my hand without restriction, I regained everything back. I gained all my weightlifting strength back by about the 4 month point and all the swelling went away. Fingers work like normal now. Only issue I had, and still have, is that there’s so much scar tissue that my pinky gets freezing cold really quickly in the winter. Hope that helps.

My rose has become a tree and has a thick trunk (around 1" diameter), also, it has some of the common black spots that appear on leafs. 1- Is it alright to propagate from the thick trunk, or should I get cuttings from the smaller but hard branches? 2- Should I avoid cuttings that have black spots , or is it ok? Will these spots cause harm? Legend! Thank you! 🙏
